Make Democracy Work  – Participate!

To view Kaslo Community Forum Meeting notes, click here:These days it can seem difficult to have your voice heard in government.  Many of us only speak our ideas to one another and they are never heard by those people in power who are working for us. This May, MLA Michelle Mungall  is holding two community forums; giving you a chance to be heard.  These forums are structured like a strategic planning session where Michelle will act as the MC and a listener to your concerns and ideas. The evening will be broken into two different parts; the first includes local speakers who will be able to help inform everyone of the topic and offer an educated perspective.  The second part includes breaking into smaller groups to discuss and brainstorm ideas.  The groups will then come back together to present their discussions.  The results from the discussions will be typed up, added to michellemungal.com and used as a direction for her work.  A forum like this was already held in Creston in  March and proved to be very successful.  For democracy to work people need to participate;  these forums provide an excellent opportunity for your ideas to help shape the future of your community.

The first forum will be in Kaslo at The Langham on Tuesday May 11 from 7-9 pm.  The topic will be Healthcare with key discussions being access to emergency care, primary and long term care.   There will be guest speakers.

The Second forum will be in Salmo at The Salmo Valley Community Centre in the Youth Lounge on Wednesday May 12 from 7-9 pm.  The topic will be Childcare with key discussions being childcare’s role in economic development, fulfilling demand and funding.  Guest speakers will include Cathy Paton, the director of Salmo  Childrens Centre.

MLA Michelle Mungall Hosts Agricultural Event with Corky Evans

CRESTON – Agriculture is a way of life in the Creston Valley. On Tuesday March 16 MLA Michelle Mungall is hosting Let’s Grow! Agricultural Forum with special guest Corky Evans. Starting at 6:30pm, members of the public are welcome to join Mungall, Evans and local experts at the Creston Chamber of Commerce Visitors Centre, 121 Northwest Blvd. (Hwy 3). Evans will touch on the important relationship growing food has with government policies. Local experts will add the issues of value-added production, developing local markets and the Agricultural Land Reserve to the conversation.

“Without a doubt, the Creston Valley is the agricultural epicentre of the Kootenays,” says Mungall. “We have so much economic development potential to further grow our agricultural sector in Creston. By coming together to learn, talk and network, we can further build on our strong agricultural roots.”

This forum is part of Mungall’s election promise to hold annual community forums on issues of local importance. Having heard from many local farmers and producers, Mungall is working to support this significant economic sector of the Kootenays. The forum is open to all members of the public.
