Michelle Mungall: BioOn May 12th, 2009, at the age of 31 years-old, Michelle became the first woman elected as MLA in Nelson-Creston. Along with her role as Opposition Critic for Advanced Education, Youth and Labour Market Development, she chairs the NDP Opposition Women's Caucus and sits on the Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services. As a member of the Official Opposition shadow cabinet, Michelle will hold the government accountable for its promises and provide positive alternatives to help British Columbians. Integral to the NDP’s positive vision for the future is protecting our environment, improving vital social services and good economic planning. In 2002, Michelle set the record for the youngest person ever elected to Nelson City Council. While on Nelson City Council, she put her energy towards boosting environmental sustainability, economic development and the arts. Her university studies and her career in community development have allowed Michelle to champion social justice and financial security both in her community and internationally. Eventually, her experience brought her to Zambia, where she worked to better the lives of girls with HIV/AIDS. As a passionate speaker, Michelle continues to be a strong voice for the Kootenays. Michelle and her partner Zak reside in their Nelson home. They enjoy skiing, hiking, local arts and being active in the region. What People Are Saying“…A rising star in the NDP and on the B.C. political scene.” "Thank you for all the hard work you do in this community! You help make this a great place to live." “…Michelle Mungall, I love her. She’s on the street, and young and untainted enough to remember what it’s like to be an everyday person.” "Michelle is kind of the future of the New Democratic Party. Young, energetic, smart, able to connect with people and attract the kind of people we want to attract to our party." “You know that Mungall is an intelligent woman with a clear grasp of NDP policy. You know she is a widely respected MLA in caucus; and further, has worked tirelessly for her constituency.” “…the replacement for the venerable Corky Evans, a woman named Michelle Mungall. I think she’s really one to watch. She’s, I think, 31, 32 years old, a real dynamo.” “How unusual and wonderful to have someone who, in their first year of office, could focus on something rather than simply avoiding embarrassment. For the rest of us, we had to learn some skill sets to do the work. Whereas Michelle seems to have been born with those skill sets.” “…Mungall is going to make a significant impact this next decade. By the time we head to the polls for a provincial election mid-decade, she could very well be one of the leading voices of her party. And regardless of your political stripe, that prospect should be welcome news for folks in the Nelson-Creston riding.” "If Mungall and children's commissioner Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond hadn't raised hell -- and if the media hadn't paid attention -- I doubt these nameless victims of violence would have seen their funding restored." “Michelle knows it’s about making a difference. Michelle wants to get things done.”
